Chinoiserie
The chinoiserie style has been a strong and enduring influence on western decor and design for several centuries. Its origins lie in the extravagant tales brought back to Europe from China by early explorers and merchant adventurers such as Marco Polo. The French Court of the 17th century was entranced by the style (hence the French name) and this quickly spread throughout Europe including England where it influenced English potters making ornaments and tiles. Popularity grew during the 19th and into the 20th century and the style can be found today in many historic buildings. Chinoiserie remains a highly pervasive design influence today.
We have produced a range of chinoiserie tiles using classic blue and white designs. The tiles are hand made in our workshop and individually painted by hand. You can see the range in our Chinoiserie Gallery

Hand painted design tiles £14.50 to £20.00 each.
Chinoiserie tiles remain both very desirable and popular and at Norton Tile we are one of the very few tile makers in Europe to continue the traditional craft methods - using hand made tiles and hand painting a wide variety of designs. Indeed, because the tiles are hand painted, you are able to choose your own particular style and theme, alternatively we have a great library of original designs to provide inspiration.
Traditional 'corners only' tiles (£3.60 each) repeat the small corner decor from the design tiles and they can be used to maintain the decoration style over a wider area as an alternative to plain tiles. Corners only tiles are available to match all our design tiles. Plain glazed ('field') tiles (£175 per sq metre) are also available to match.
Both 4 and 5 inch tiles are available.
Examples of chinoiserie tiles we have made for clients are exhibited in our on-line Chinoiserie Gallery.
