delft tiles
In the 16 century Dutch potters based in Delft started to produce white tin glaze wall tiles with bright, typically blue, hand-painted patterns. The use of the white tin glaze was to mimic the natural whiteness of chinese porcelain.
These delft tiles proved very popular and were exported throughout Europe. The Dutch potters themselves travelled and by 1650 were producing 'delft' in London and other British cities.
Delft tiles remain both very desirable and popular and at Norton Tile we are one of the very few tile makers in Europe to continue the traditional craft methods - using hand made tiles and hand painting a wide variety of designs. Indeed, because the tiles are hand painted, you are able to choose your own particular theme, alternatively we have a great library of original delft designs to provide inspiration.
Traditional 'corners only' tiles repeat the small corner decor from the design tiles and they can be used to maintain the decoration style over a wider area as an alternative to plain tiles. Corners only tiles are available to match all our design tiles. Plain glazed ('field') tiles are also available to match.
Hand painted design tiles £9.50 each.
Hand painted 'corners only' tiles £3.20 each.
Matching plain tiles £145 per square metre.
Both 4 and 5 inch tiles are available.
Examples of delft tiles we have made for clients are exhibited in our on-line Delft Galleries.
